Detroit Prophets

I read the despair in your poem

about your return back home

all the memory

past the tragedy

all that’s left is the aftermath.

Back Home.

Back Home, on my front porch

writing and singing my songs

You’re coming back home

I can feel it

and the past will set the new tone

Back home

and the prophet returned

to find his city burned

but as the hearts were broken

they spoke your truth

in a way that the people finally heard your word,

they knew that their God had spoken

and the people finally learned,

and the holes in the roof

and the hurt on the street

were made new when their hearts had turned.

and healed the remains of the city.

Back Home, on my front porch

writing and singing my songs

You’re coming back home

I can feel it

and the past will set the new tone

Back home

The energy is sapped out of me

the power of the history

and how much you meant to me

and now I’m calling you to go back

to the things that you could do-

if you’d only be true to you.

You’re not alone- back home

Back Home, on my front porch

writing and singing my songs

You’re coming back home

I can feel it

and the past will set the new tone

Back home

Despair in poetry

from the home you use to be

but the truth it shall set you free

Going back home.

Can’t forget the Motor City.
